Electronic, optical, and mechanical systems are generally designed and developed for their function and utility alone, or for low cost and ease of commercial manufacture. Alternatively, such systems may be designed and constructed primarily for aesthetic appeal, with utility being only a secondary concern, and emphasizing internal structure and organization rather than hiding it. The clock shown here was developed with such concerns in mind, and has been placed with a private client. Its numeric display was constructed from antique "Nixie" neon vacuum tubes. Because it uses a temperature stabilized quartz resonator as its timebase, it is also exceedingly accurate.
