VAF-5D2 Optical Anti-Aliasing Filter: Frequently Asked Questions

Q.  Do you have a filter for the Canon 7D?
A.  A version of the filter designed to work with the 7D is in development; please check back in the future for updates and news regarding this.

Q.  What happens when the camera tries to lower its reflex mirror?  Can the camera be damaged in this case?  What about when the camera leaves "live view"mode, or if I accidentally try to take a still photograph while the VAF-5D2 is installed?
A.  In none of these cases, is there a danger of damage to your camera.  The reflex mirror within the 5D Mark II is lowered by the pressure of an internal spring - it isn't forced or driven downard by a motor or other mechanism.  The presence of the filter within the camera merely retains the mirror gently in its raised position, so that it doesn't fall downwards under spring pressure.

Q.  Will it hurt my camera to leave the VAF-5D2 filter installed?
A.  We don't believe that it will; we have had users of the filter report leaving the filter installed continuously for up to three months, with no negative effects. Nevertheless, at this point we don't recommend leaving the filter installed in your camera permanently.

Q.  Why not install an anti-aliasing / anti-moiré filter in front of the lens?
A.  To work well, this would require a different filter for each lens focal length.

Q.  Doesn’t the 5D Mark II already have an anti-aliasing filter?
A.  Yes... the internal Canon anti-aliasing filter is combined with the infrared cut filter and installed directly over the CMOS image sensor. The internal filter effectively minimizes aliasing when shooting full-resolution, 21.1MP still images, but it has little useful effect when shooting 1080p (2.2MP) video.

Q.  Is there light loss through the filter?
A.  The light loss is minimal - less than 1/8 F-stop, and normally not perceptible.

Q.  Will the VAF-5D2 work on any other cameras?
A.  It wasn't designed to.  The filter was designed specifically in consideration of the way that the 5D Mark II produces 1080p video from its 21MP sensor.  The physical size and shape of the filter housing are also highly specific to the 5D Mark II.

Q.  Can I see some actual video shot with the VAF-5D2 filter?
A.  Yes... Visit our website for details.
